Elevator Safety Explained: Integrated Protection with LiDAR, Safety Edge, and AI Vision Sensors

Today, elevators and lifting platforms have become indispensable vertical transportation equipment in industrial production, construction, warehousing, and logistics. They are widely used for the vertical transfer of materials and personnel. However, behind their frequent use lie multiple potentially serious safety risks, including crushing, shearing, and safety-device failures. Once control is lost, these incidents can result in serious injuries, fatalities, and property damage.

During the automatic opening and closing of elevator doors, several significant and recurring safety hazards may arise. If workers remain near or pass through the doorway, or if materials have not been completely removed or tools have not been cleared in time, a sudden door descent can cause serious accidents such as crushing, collision, or entrapment. This not only directly threatens the safety of personnel on site but may also damage equipment structures and transported goods.

One reliable solution for addressing this common safety issue is to equip the system with our LiDAR sensor. The device is typically installed above the elevator doorway and uses laser scanning to create a 270° editable fan-shaped detection area. The detection area's size and shape can be flexibly adjusted according to on-site conditions, available space, and operating practices.

When the system detects a person or obstacle remaining within the protected area, it immediately locks the door-down command, preventing the door from descending and eliminating the risk of sudden collision or crushing at the source. This significantly improves the safety and operational stability of the lifting equipment.

Safety Edge: Secondary Protection Against Door Crushing

In addition to active protection with a LiDAR sensor, a Safety Edge can be integrated to provide dual protection against crushing injuries caused by descending elevator doors.

The Safety Edge is generally installed along the lower edge of the door. It is a soft, flexible, and highly adaptable strip- or round-shaped safety component featuring fast response, high reliability, and easy installation.

Its operating principle is straightforward: when an operator's body, limb, or another object accidentally presses against or contacts the Safety Edge, the pressure change inside the edge rapidly activates the sensing switch. The resulting signal is immediately transmitted to the elevator control system, which then executes safety actions such as stopping the equipment and triggering an alarm, forcibly preventing the door from continuing to descend.

This passive protection mechanism provides a second layer of safety, further reducing the risk of crushing injuries.

AI Vision Sensor: Intelligent Monitoring for No-Passenger Lifting Platforms

In addition, lifting freight platforms may be subject to strict safety requirements prohibiting passenger transportation or unauthorized riding. To address this requirement, our Mu Ke Min You MVS-HDS AI Vision Safety Sensor can be integrated to provide intelligent and visual safety monitoring.

Based on AI human detection technology and a proprietary human-detection algorithm, the sensor can dynamically analyze and intelligently compare real-time images inside the lifting platform and its surrounding work area.

When a person is detected entering a restricted area where passenger access is prohibited, the sensor immediately outputs a safety trigger signal and rapidly communicates with the lifting platform control system to initiate emergency deceleration or shutdown.

This helps prevent the safety risks associated with unauthorized passenger transportation at the technical level and further strengthens the overall safety protection system.

An Integrated Safety System for Lifting Equipment

In summary, lifting equipment safety is a systematic task that requires comprehensive protection across multiple dimensions, including active prevention, passive protection, and intelligent monitoring.

The LiDAR sensor, Safety Edge, and AI vision human-detection sensor each perform distinct functions while complementing one another. Together, they can effectively prevent common accidents such as door crushing and collisions while also helping eliminate unauthorized passenger transportation on freight lifting platforms at the source.

Integrating these intelligent safety devices throughout the equipment's operating process can significantly reduce the risk of safety incidents, protect personnel and equipment, improve on-site operational efficiency, and provide solid and reliable technical support for safe and compliant industrial operations.
